Where the Xiaomi 17 Wins
Battery and charging. This is not a close contest. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 offers a more elegant user experience and longer software support, but falls down on battery and charging performance. The Xiaomi 17 has 47% more battery capacity and charges at 4x the speed.
Camera hardware. Three 50MP cameras with Leica tuning, including a dedicated 60mm telephoto with 10cm macro capability. The Galaxy S26 base model does not have a telephoto camera at all.
Display brightness. The Xiaomi 17’s display peaked at a little above 1,000 nits on a 75% white patch in auto mode and reached more than 3,400 nits with a 10% patch. Both metrics suggest excellent outdoor legibility.
Price. $630 vs $799. That is a $169 gap.
Where the Galaxy S26 Wins
Software and updates. Samsung guarantees 7 years of OS updates and 7 years of security patches. Xiaomi has not made an equivalent commitment.
US availability. As usual, the phone is not available in the US. If you are in America, the Galaxy S26 is your only real option between these two.
Software polish. With Samsung bringing this kind of ammunition to the fight, Xiaomi would do well to spend a little less time trying to be Apple and a little more time figuring out how to compete with rivals inside the Android stable.
Galaxy AI. Samsung’s AI features, including Now Nudge, Perplexity Bixby, and Privacy Display, are more mature and better integrated than Xiaomi’s HyperAI.
Weight and thickness. The Galaxy S26 at 7.2mm is noticeably thinner than the Xiaomi 17 at 8.06mm. At 163g vs 191g, Samsung is 28g lighter.
The Honest Verdict
If you want a smaller smartphone that can still go the distance, battery life and charging speeds are the Xiaomi 17’s biggest strengths, while the rest of the package gives up nothing to its main rivals.
Buy the Xiaomi 17 if you live outside the US, prioritize battery life above everything else, and want a Leica triple camera system with a dedicated telephoto for under $650. Nothing else at this size matches it.
Buy the Galaxy S26 if you are in the US, you want guaranteed 7 year updates, you prefer Samsung’s software ecosystem and Galaxy AI features, or you want the thinnest and lightest compact flagship available.
Both phones run the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Both have 120Hz OLED displays. Both are under 6.5 inches. But they are built for very different buyers.
