The Google Pixel 10a launched on March 5, 2026, at $499. It has the same 6.3 inch display size as the Pixel 10. The same 48MP main camera. The same 13MP ultrawide. The same IP68 rating. And a larger 5,100mAh battery. For $300 less. Here is what the extra $300 on the Pixel 10 actually buys you.
The Pixel 10a Launched Earlier Than Any Pixel Before
Google announced the Pixel 10a on February 18, 2026, and released it on March 5. That is nearly four months earlier than the Pixel 8a launched in the prior year.
The Pixel 10a starts at $499 in the US. It comes in four colors: Fog, Obsidian, Berry, and Lavender. It launched with Android 16 and gets seven years of OS and security updates, the same commitment as the flagship Pixel 10.
What the Pixel 10a Has That Surprises People
The Pixel 10a runs on the Tensor G4, not the Tensor G5. That is the older chip from the Pixel 9 series. Google made a deliberate choice here, skipping the current generation chip to keep the price at $499.
But the rest of the spec sheet is competitive in ways nobody expected.
The display is a 6.3 inch pOLED with up to 3,000 nits peak brightness, 11% brighter than the Pixel 9a. The bezels are 10% slimmer than last year. The front glass upgraded to Gorilla Glass 7i from the Gorilla Glass 3 on the 9a.
The 5,100mAh battery is actually 130mAh larger than the Pixel 10’s 4,970mAh cell. And the Pixel 10a gained Satellite SOS via the upgraded Exynos 5400 modem, a feature the Pixel 9a never had.
Camera Coach and Auto Best Take, both flagship Pixel 10 features, are confirmed on the Pixel 10a.
What the $799 Pixel 10 Has That the 10a Does Not
The Pixel 10 comes with the newer Tensor G5 chip on TSMC’s 3nm process. That means faster AI processing, better thermal management, and support for more demanding Gemini features going forward.
The Pixel 10 also adds a 5x telephoto camera that the Pixel 10a does not have. For zoom photography, that gap is significant.
The Pixel 10 supports Pixelsnap Qi2 magnetic wireless charging. The Pixel 10a omits the Pixelsnap magnets entirely to hit its price point, supporting only standard 10W wireless charging.
Storage starts at 128GB on both phones, but the Pixel 10 goes up to 256GB while the Pixel 10a stops there too.
The Honest Verdict: Which One Should You Buy
For most people, the Pixel 10a is the right choice in March 2026.
The brighter display, larger battery, Satellite SOS, Camera Coach, and Gemini AI features cover the vast majority of what makes a Google Pixel worth buying. The Tensor G4 is not slow. It handled every daily task smoothly on the Pixel 9 series for a full year.
Buy the Pixel 10 if the 5x telephoto matters to you, if you specifically want Pixelsnap magnetic accessories, or if you want the latest chip for longer term AI feature support.
Buy the Pixel 10a if you want the best value Google Pixel in 2026. At $499, it delivers the core Pixel experience with a bigger battery, bright display, and the same software commitments, for $300 less.
The Pixel 10 is not a bad phone. But the Pixel 10a makes it very hard to recommend to anyone who is not specifically chasing telephoto zoom or wireless charging magnets.
