Galaxy S24 Ultra Battery Drain Fix After March 20 Update

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra battery drain, March 2026 update fix, Google Play System Update, Galaxy S24 battery fix, Mainline update

If your Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra started draining battery out of nowhere this week, a Google Play System Update on March 20, 2026 is the likely cause. The fix takes 30 seconds. Here is exactly what happened and how to reverse it.

What Happened on March 20

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra owner on the Samsung US Community forum documented the issue in detail.

On March 20th they manually checked for updates and installed the latest Google Play System Update (Mainline). After the reboot, the phone went from normal idle drain to catastrophic drain, dropping over 10% in a couple of hours while sitting idle, and continuing to fall rapidly even with minimal use.

Nothing showed up in battery stats, no heat, no CPU load. Classic Mainline module failure.

This is not a Samsung software issue. It is a Google Play Systems update that impacted the phone.

The Fix That Works Immediately

There was a “Remove updates” option. The user removed the Mainline update, the phone rebooted, and battery behavior immediately returned to normal.

Here is how to do it on your Samsung Galaxy S24:

  1. Open Settings on your phone.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap the three dot menu in the top right corner and select Show system apps.
  4. Scroll down and find Main components or Google Play system components.
  5. Tap it.
  6. Tap the three dot menu again and select Uninstall updates.
  7. Restart your phone.

This only happened because the user manually checked for the Google Play System Update. It did not auto install.

Why This Is Not a Samsung Bug

This is important to understand. The March 20 battery drain is not caused by Samsung’s firmware or One UI.

It is not specifically a Samsung software issue; rather a Google Play Systems update that may have impacted your phone.

Google Play System Updates (also called Mainline updates) update core Android components directly through the Play Store, bypassing Samsung’s own update process. When one of these modules fails, it can cause battery drain, connectivity issues, or app crashes that Samsung’s own support team cannot fix.

One user responded: “It’s a great example of why the ability to uninstall Mainline updates was introduced in the first place.”

Other Galaxy S24 Issues in March 2026

The Google Play drain is not the only problem Samsung Galaxy S24 owners have reported this month.

One user reported network issues after the recent February Patch 2026 update on their S24 Ultra.

Another Samsung Community user reported that after updating their Samsung S24 FE to the January 2026 security patch, the phone was not charging properly and taking much more time to charge to 100%.

Samsung’s March 2026 security patch has started rolling out and may address some of these issues. It is a security centric software, which brings 67 patches.

If your Samsung Galaxy S24 suddenly drains battery faster than normal, check your Google Play System Update version before contacting Samsung support. The Mainline rollback is the fastest fix available right now.
